Impediments & Barriers

Barriers and impediments obstruct or delay the progress of developing or maintaining a useful enterprise architecture. They are different from drivers in that a driver directs the architecture to accommodate a need or constraint, while an impediment or barrier hinders development of the enterprise architecture to meet the need or constraint.

Examples of barriers and impediments are: failure to obtain approval and support from senior executives, lack of enterprise architecting skills in an organization, not positioning the enterprise architecture team correctly within the organization, insufficient cooperation with the enterprise architecture team, and communication and organizational barriers between the developers of an EA and intended users and beneficiaries of the EA.

This topic area provides an EA practitioner access to guidance, case studies, and other references that help anticipate impediments to be considered and how to address and overcome them.
